So, 3 police officers attached to Urban Patrol, Enugu Police Command last Friday stopped a 

Sienna Car conveying passengers from Awka to Abuja somewhere at Opi junction Nsukka.
In the course of conducting extortion-induced search, they saw a lap top and two phones with a youngman in the car and decided, against protests by the passengers, to take them to their station to check the youngman's laptop and phones to ascertain that he's not a 'Yahoo boy'.
On their way, they asked the youngman to settle them along the way as he may pay more if they get to the station. They demanded 500k from him. The youngman pleaded until they agreed to collect 30k to free him.
Meanwhile, after several hours of delay by the police officers, the other passengers left the youngman to continue their journey to Abuja.
The police officers eventually took the young man to a corner close to their station where they eventually agreed to collect the 30k ransom.
They then took him to a bank where he withdrew the money and gave them. He had to pay another transport fare to continue his journey. A clear case of Abduction, Hostage-Taking, Blackmail and Robbery.
I put up a petition to the CP Enugu which got to the OC Urban Patrol.

UPDATE ON THE CASE

The OC Urban Patrol, Enugu State called me this morning in respect of this petition which I was planning to dispatch to the CP Enugu this morning. He said someone who read the petition on a platform forwarded it to him yesterday and he was appalled.
He said he was able to identify the men who, after initial denial, admitted that they committed the crimes as adumbrated in the petition.
He unreservedly condemned the actions of his men and has asked them to immediately raise the 30k they robbed from the youngman as well as the extra cost he incurred paying for transport a second time to continue his journey to Abuja.
He also promised to deal 'departmentally' with the 'greedy officers' as he described them, for deterrence.
He has mandated the officers to immediately call the victim, apologise to him and collect his account details for the refunds.
He has also personally called and apologised to the victim and asked him to confirm to him as soon as he receives the refunds.

President Buhari welcomes support of the Italian government to help recover and repatriate illegally deposited Nigerian assets in foreign countries

Today, President Buhari in Abuja welcomed the support of the Italian government to help recover and repatriate illegally deposited Nigerian assets in foreign countries.

President Buhari spoke when he received a delegation from the Italian Parliament led by Senator Vito Petrocelli, Chairman Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs at State House.

The Italian Ambassador to Nigeria, Dr Stefano Pontesilli, who accompanied the delegation, while conveying the message of the Italian Government had told the Nigerian leader: ‘‘We are willing to cooperate with your administration 100 per cent on illicit assets repatriation.’’

Responding, President Buhari commended the Italian government for demonstrating ‘‘open-mindedness’’ and willingness to cooperate with Nigeria on the issue of repatriation of stolen funds.

 The President while acknowledging the good wishes of the Italian government in the aftermath of the February 23 presidential election, told the delegation that his second term in office would consolidate on the progress recorded in the last four years in the country. He also used the occasion to remind developed countries to do the needful on reviving Lake Chad.

‘‘Lake Chad is now 10 per cent of what it used to be. At least 30 million people around it benefit from fishing, farming and animal husbandry. The drying up of Lake Chad has forced some people to defy the Sahara desert and the Mediterranean in their bid to get to Europe,’’ he said.

President Buhari thanked the Italian government for its policy of accommodating displaced persons, particularly African refugees. The President also appreciated the Italian delegation for emphasizing the cordial relationship between Nigeria and Italy and the need to establish a ‘‘bilateral committee on friendship’’ that would identify areas of cooperation and work collectively.

The trial of Touyo Omatsuli, a former Executive Director on Projects, Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, and Francis Momoh resumed today, Monday 10th June, 2019 at the Federal High Court before Justice Saliu Seidu sitting in Ikoyi, Lagos.

At today's proceedings, a prosecution witness, Ibinabo Micheal West told the Court how he transferred in tranches the total sum of N3.6 billion to the fourth defendant company, Building Associate Limited, owned by the second defendant, Francis Momoh on the instruction of the first defendant, Touyo Omasuli.

Ibinabo West, a business man working in PortHarcourt futher told the court that he was awarded a contract with the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, to recover debt owed by the oil companies operating within the Niger Delta region.

"The oil companies were to remit a three percentage annual budget to the NDDC which they were not remitting in full rather they were doing it at will. My services and company Starline Consultancy Services was awarded the contract to recover the debt owed the Commission by the oil companies and I was given a four years mandate. I was also going to be paid ten percent of the recovered money".

Testifying further, Ibinabo said "I recovered over One Hundred Billion Naira, and I was paid about Twelve Billion Naira. While I was receiving payments, I was approached by the then Executive Director Finance, directing my attention to the harassment by the Niger Delta Youth, that they sometime lock up their gates and made several demands, so he said in order to cushion the effects on them, each time I am paid, I should appreciate them, so they can reach out to the youths".

"A Diamond Bank account was sent to me belonging to Building Associate Limited and I transferred a total amount of N3.6 Billion Naira to that account in tranches.

Ibinabo, who is the fourth prosecution witness, also told the court that his attention was drawn by the then Executive Director of Finance that the EFCC was investigating the works of NDDC and Starline Services. "The first defendant called me, that he would send the third defendant and I should give a sub consultancy make up Letter to Building Associate Limited, which was to explain the money I gave to them, to reach out to the youth and I obliged".

The Sub Consultancy make up letter, Offer of Contract Letter and Acceptance Letter we're tendered by the prosecution counsel, Ekene Iheanacho, and admitted in evidence by the court.

Ibinabo, during cross-examination by the defence, told the court when asked if all the money paid to him by NDDC was proceeds of crime. He responded, that the money was earned, as he worked for it, and the money he paid for the Niger Delta youth, are not illegal funds, or money used to bribe NDDC officials to release his funds, and the said money was not paid directly into the first defendants accounts.

Counsel to the second, third and fourth defendant, Norrison Quakers, during cross examination asked the witness if he knew him and how? The witness told the court that he knows the SAN, while at EFCC office, “I, the first defendant and the third defendant were asked to bring a SAN to take us on bail, so i paid the SAN to take the third defendant on bail as i already had another SAN taking me on bail”.

He further asked if he made a statement at the EFCC office. Ibinabo admitted that he made statements to the EFCC when he was invited by the Commission, the counsel sought to tender the statements made at EFCC. Justice Seidu admitted it in evidence and marked it exhibit ET 09 A & B.

The witness further told the court that he wrote in his statement that the Director of Finance instructed him to pay the money into Building Associate Limited account, he told the court that he participated in the bid to get the contract for the recovery of the debts, as he has another oil Company and is abreast of the activities of NDDC, and the contract was gotten on his own without any influence from the defendants.

The defendants, who were charged alongside their companies, Don Parker Properties Limited and Building Associates Limited respectively, were arraigned on November 10, 2018 on a 45-count charge bordering on conspiracy and money laundering to the tune of N3,645,000,000 (Three Billion, Six Hundred and Forty-Five Million Naira).

The defendants pleaded “not guilty” to the charges preferred against them and were subsequently granted bail on November 16, 2018 in the sum of N100 million each with two sureties in like sum. Justice Seidu adjourned the case to June 11, 25 and 26, 2019 for continuation of trial.

Presiding Justice of the Lagos Division of the Court of Appeal, M. L Garba has joined the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal replacing Justice Zainab Bulkachuwa.

Garba was on the five-man panel on Monday. Justice Bulkachuwa recused herself as a member and head of the five-man panel on May 22, following the allegation of the likelihood of bias levelled against her by the PDP and Atiku.

The petitioners had alleged in their earlier application filed on May 16, 2019 that with the judge remaining as a member and head of the five-man tribunal, their petition would not be handled impartially.

President Buhari has accepted the voluntary retirement from service of Justice Walter Onnoghen as the Chief Justice of Nigeria.

According to the statement, the retirement takes effect from May 28th 2019. The President thanked Justice Onnoghen for his service to the Federal Republic of Nigeria and wished him the best of retirement life. 

 Justice Onnoghen who assumed office as CJN in March 2017, was suspended by President Buhari in January over false declaration of assets.

President Muhammadu Buhari has written the Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria, Hon. Justice Tanko Muhammad, on the appointment of additional five Justices of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

The President wrote: Pursuant to the provisions of Section 230(2) A&B of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), I am pleased to request that you initiate in earnest the process of appointing additional five Justices of the Supreme Court of Nigeria to make the full complement of 21 Justices as provided by the aforementioned provisions of the Constitution.

This is in line with the Governments Agenda of repositioning the Judiciary in general and Supreme Court in particular for greater efficiency, with a view to reducing the backlogs of appeals pending at the Supreme Court.

Please accept, your Lordship, the assurances of my highest regards.

The singer who was arrested on May 10th by the EFCC, is awaiting the fulfillment of his bail conditions.He was arraigned in court by the EFCC on grounds of allegedly committing cyber crimes.

Lagos state police command have arrested a two-man motorcycle snatchers

The Lagos state police command have arrested a two-man motorcycle snatching syndicate.

 A statement released by the command's spokesperson, Bala Elkana, says on the 8th of June at about 10.00am, one Mohammed  Faruk 'm' of No 37 Teslim Street, Bariga reported at Sabo Police Station that, two men namely Tobi Onileowo 'm' 26year old of Ilupeju and Olakunle  Ayo 'm' 25years old of Igbogbo, Ikorodu shot him with a gun in an attempt to snatch his motorcycle.

A team of Police Officers led by the Divisional Police Officer Sabo, CSP Chike Ibe swung into action.  The suspects engaged the team in a gun battle but were subdued.

Tobi Onileowo was arrested while Olakunle  Ayo was fatally injured.

One Double Barrel pistol with two expanded cartridges and one live cartridge were recovered from the suspects.

Bala said the suspects will be charged to court once investigation into the matter is concluded

Police bans rallies in Kano State over Governor Ganduje and Emir Sanusi's beef

The Kano State Police Command has banned any form of rally, demonstration, procession or assembly in the state until further notice.

 The order was contained in a statement signed by the Command’s Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Abdullahi Haruna, and made available to newsmen in Kano on Saturday. Similarly, he said, the command had withdrawn permission given to members of the public, civil society organisations, political parties, NGOs and other groups.  

The order is said to be connected with the tension generated following the query issued to the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II, over alleged misappropriation of N3.4 billion by the Emirate Council under his (Sanusi) leadership.

He explained that the action was necessary to prevent any threat, breach of the peace or break down of law and order in the face of various security challenges in the state.

He warned that any person or group of persons found engaging in any unlawful assembly would be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the laws of the land.  

“The Public should know the position of the state command in maintaining peace and order in the society,” the spokesman cautioned. He, therefore, warned groups under whatever guise to adhere to the order until further notice or face the wrath of the law. “The measure is to assure a lasting peace and unity in the State,“ Haruna emphasised.

Saraki donates N7.4m severance allowance to Leah Sharibu’s family, others

Immediate past President of the Nigerian Senate, Bukola Saraki, has directed that the National Assembly Management should distribute his Severance Allowance to families of three victims of the insurgency in the North-East, this includes Leah Sharibu's family.

According to the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission, the former Senate President, is entitled to a severance package of N7,452,727 .

 A non-returning senator is entitled to a severance allowance of N6,079,200. Deputy Senate President is entitled to N6,927,500,25. Non-returning Member of the House of Representatives is entitled to N5,955,637.

 In a statement released by his Special Adviser (Media and Publicity), Yusuph Olaniyonu, Saraki stated that the Severance Allowance should be used to support the families of Leah Sharibu, who is being held by Boko Haram.

 He said that part of the money should also be donated to the families of two humanitarian workers abducted and subsequently murdered by Boko Haram insurgents – Hussaini Ahmed Khoisan and Hauwa Liman.

 The former Senate President also directed that children of late members of the Eight Senate who may require financial assistance in furtherance of their education as a Trust Fund is to be established by the management of the National Assembly for the purpose.

 He stated that his decision to use the severance package to support the selected victims of the insurgency was based on the fact that their cases represented some of the most touching humanitarian issues debated at the plenary during the four-years of the Eighth Senate and on which his colleagues and himself made emotional and passionate speeches.

According to him, 20 per cent of the severance allowance is to be donated to the family of Leah Sharibu while 20 percent is also to be paid to the family of Hauwa Liman, the aid worker brutally murdered by Boko Haram after she was captured.

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has given the chiefs and leaders of Andoni Local Government Area, a 72-Hour ultimatum to ensure the immediate release of three kidnapped expatriates of Raffoul Nigeria Limited who are involved in the construction of the Unity Road in the area.

Governor Wike said failure to secure the release of the three expatriates kidnapped by Andoni youths at the expiration of the ultimatum, he will formally withdraw the recognition of all Government Recognised Chiefs in the Local Government Area and cancel the Andoni aspect of the Unity Road project.

Governor Wike further stated that other communities across the State must take measures to protect contractors and workers executing projects for them.

He said the same sanctions will be meted out to other communities where Chiefs and leaders allow project contractors to be kidnapped by community youths.

A woman has been accused of burning her stepson's face with an electric iron and the boy's father is accused of doing nothing about it. According to Twitter user Opomulero Eleniyan, the boy, Ezekiel Kuti, 10, is the son of a military officer. 

The officer's wife allegedly used a hot iron to brand the officer's son's face at their home in Owode Onirin, opposite Old Barack in Lagos.Photos of the boy's face shows he was burnt on both cheeks, mouth, and jaw. He also had scars on his back and other parts of his body.

Rafael Nadal beats Dominic Thiem to win 12th French Open title at the 2019 French Open

Spanish Tennis champion, Rafael Nadal, 33, has won a record 12th French Open title after beating Austria's Dominic Thiem in four sets in the final tournament of the 2019 French Open.

Nadal, the world No 2 defeated the 25-year-old Austrian opponent & world No 4,   6-3, 5-7, 6-1, 6-1 in exactly three hours to claim his victory at the Court Philippe Chatrier this evening.

He now becomes the first player to win a dozen titles on the same court (Margaret Court won her 12 Australian Opens at different venues), putting him four clear of Roger Federer’s eight at Wimbledon and Novak Djokovic’s seven in Melbourne.

The win for him, also means he now has 18 Grand Slam, (French Open - 12, US Open - 3, Wimbledon - 2 and Australian Open - 1).

Speaking on his win, he said: 'Congrats to Dominic, I feel sorry because he deserves it, I really hope he wins in future. He has unbelievable intensity and passion for this sport. I want to encourage him.

'It's an unbelievable moment for me, I can't explain it. For me it was a dream to play the first time in 2005. 

'I never thought back then that in 2019 I would still be here so it's very special for me.'

Authorities in Spain are hunting for armed robbers who broke into the home of Chelsea striker Alvaro Moratawhile his wife and children were inside.

 According to Daily Mail, the burglars struck on Friday night as the 26-year-old who is on loan at Atletico Madrid was in the Faroe Islands for Spain's Euro 2020 qualifier.

Police sources said they believe the armed intruders may have gotten into the property in the exclusive neighbourhood of La Moraleja north of Madrid via an upstairs window.

During the quick operation, Morata's Italian wife Alice Campello and their twin sons Alessandro and Leonardo, one next month, were inside along with a nanny but none were harmed.

The burglars are believed to have taken a number of valuables during their quick raid, which happened around 11pm on Friday.

61-year-old man arrested for cutting off hand of 11-year-old boy

The Lagos state police command have arrested a 61-year-old man identified as Jeremiah Obifor, for cutting off the hand of an 11year-old boy identied as Goodluck Amechi, in the Okokomaiko area of the state.

A statement by the command's spokesperson, Bala Elkana, says on Friday June 7th, a lady identified as  Doris Isaac of No.6 Ajanaku Street, Okoko reported at Okoko Police Station that on the same date at about 8.20am, her foster son, Goodluck was attacked with a  matchet by one Jeremiah and cut off his right hand.

The victim was rushed to Igando General  Hospital. The suspect alleged that he saw the victim around his fish pond and thought that he came to steal his fish, that is why he attacked him.

Investigation is ongoing and the suspect will be charged to Court

Igbo quit notice: South was developed with resources from the North -Northern Elders

Briefing newsmen yesterday in Zaria, NEF Spokesperson Prof Ango Abdullahi said it was hypocritical for the Igbo to continue to live in other parts of the country while agitating for Nigeria’s break up. His words: “I am disappointed in the decision taken by Northern Governors’ Forum disowning and condemning the agitation by this young agile and progressive youth groups. “Let me ask these Northern governors, who are they representing, are they representing spirits, ghost or people of the north? “Recently, people from eastern part of this country, specifically Igbo, were busy calling for the Sovereign State of Biafra and from all indication, their leaders including governors are behind them.” He said whoever feels Nigeria “is not conducive for him” should quit, adding that what the northern youth groups did was not a sin. He lamented that none of the Northern governors reacted to the persistent call for the actualisation of Biafra and other agitations. Abdullahi said when Nnamdi Kanu was released on bail recently, over 100 vehicles escorted him to his residence including big personalities from the South-west and South-east. “This is somebody who has been agitating for the breakup of Nigeria but his people were behind him, therefore, I am behind the youths. “This is because the Northern youths are pushed to the wall, we have been calming them down in any event similar to this. “These people always pretend that the North is cheating them, not minding the fact that Southern Nigeria was developed with resources from the North. “Please, look for a book written by Adamu FiKa, the Waziri of Fika, on Nigeria’s budget before and after independence. “Each year, up to the time Nigeria gained its independence, none of the two regions was able to provide for itself. “I mean none of the Western and Eastern regions had the money to effectively run the affairs of its region until they get financial support from the Northern region,” he said. He recalled that the tradition had remained during the colonial masters and nothing changed after they left the country. Abdullahi said it was the same money from the North that was used to construct Nigerian Railways, refineries and other facilities. “First oil exploration was conducted using money from groundnut pyramid, cotton, hide and skin among other cash crops from Northern Nigeria. However, these people tend to forget all these goodies provided by the North toward ensuring the unity and corporate existence of Nigeria. “They always look down on us, feeling that Northerners are parasites in this country,” he said. Igbo should stop using Biafra to terrorise Nigeria—Junaid Similarly, a Second Republic lawmaker, Dr. Junaid Mohammed, asked the Federal Government to stop Igbo elite from hiding under the guise of Biafra agitation to terrorise Nigerians. Mohammed, who spoke in an interview with Saturday Vanguard, said the Igbo were not superior tribes in the country. He said: “Why should Northern elders back Igbo quit notice anyone stop the Northern youths from airing their views about those who are threatening the cooperate existence of Nigeria? The Igbo must note that they do not have a monopoly of violence and are not superior to other Nigerians in any way to warrant their incessant threats and attacks on others. “Those who are behind their nefarious Biafran bid are walking the streets free and nobody is doing anything about that. It is very sad and disappointing for the Buhari government to allow Biafra agitation to almost overwhelm the country. “This is a major threat to Nigeria that is well organised by the Igbo elite and it is unfair for the government to gloss over it for political reasons. “If the Buhari government continues to allow the Igbo to push for Biafra unhindered only to come out against the warning by Arewa youths, it will backfire because nobody can play with the intelligence of the North. “I am not a man of violence and will never advocate for any form of violence but a government that has refused to check the excesses of the Igbo, culminating in the emergence of Biafra, should be held responsible for what is unfolding now.” Ndigbo should be calm —Ezeife Also speaking, a former governor of Anambra State, Dr. Chukwuemeka Ezeife said: “I don’t see Northern Elders supporting the statement of the youths who called the Igbo unprintable names. Ango Abdullahi has been difficult to understand. He was the one who said the North was ready for Nigeria’s disintegration, only God knows if he thought about the consequence of that to the ordinary northerner not feudal people like him. The statement is illegitimate. That is a wrong reaction and I believe that common sense will prevail  eventually. I know that Northern Elders Forum consists of sagacious politicians like Maitama Sule, Justice Mamman Nasir, Tanko Yakassai and many others, who will not make such remark. Igbos should be calm and fear not because eventually, the will of God will prevail.” Their statement is a signal to bloodshed —Afenifere On its part, National Publicity Secretary of pan-Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, Mr. Yinka Odumakin said: “It is only the naive that would think that those youths were just acting on their own. The butterfly dancing on the river surface has drummers beneath the water. This is what Ango Abdullahi has confirmed with his intervention. Even their governors condemning them are just pretending. How many of them have been arrested by the police? Who opened the Arewa House for them? It is only the pathetically naive that would not know that those guys are just messengers but the message is from their collective .If there is leadership in Nigeria, this is the time to lead the process of a peaceful sorting of Nigeria to avert the looming bloodshed the Arewa youths and their elders are plotting.” Ango Abdullahi shouldn’t be taken seriously—Osuntokun In his remarks, Political Adviser to former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Chief Akin Osuntokun, said: I don’t think Ango Abdullahi needs to be taken seriously. He has clearly elected to be part of the problem by generating heat rather than light. He has also consistently done damage to his background as an academic. His vacuous assertions on the contribution of the Northern region to national income at any point in the history of Nigeria have been repeatedly proven to be  absurd. They have no basis in fact, logic or history.  Abdullahi has definitely not portrayed himself as an elder in the cherished African appreciation of that age category.’’ We need ourselves in this country—Tsav On his part, a retired Police Commissioner, Alhaji Abubakar Tsav said:”Maybe the Northern Elders made the statement out of frustration but we need ourselves in this country. The Igbo should also speak reasonably because I feel the elders were irked that none of the Igbo leaders had cautioned Kanu. However, we can’t afford bloodshed like what happened during the civil war. Let us all work for peace.” It’s an act of treason —Uranta Also reacting, Executive Secretary, Nigerian National Summit Group, NNSG, Mr. Tony Uranta said: “Although some of the signatories have been comrades seeking Justice in a restructured Nigeria, I am shocked  at this brazen and public act of treason, that could, at the very least, trigger a pogrom against all non-Northern Nigerians and, at worst, throw Nigeria into a civil war. We must never forget how the 1966 pogrom in the North eventually threw Nigeria into the costly civil war. Nnamdi Kanu’s IPOB never created terror, yet he spent a long time in detention.  These youths and their elders who are definitely trying to whip up hate and violence must be seen in the same light that Kanu was seen by the Federal Government.’’ Also, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress,APC, Mr. Shehu Hameed-Bankole said: “I am relieved to hear that we have people who are thinking differently. The so-called threat by the Arewa youths is nothing but advisory to the threat from the Igbo especially the Biafra seekers.  The narrative has to change, it is either we truly have a good look at our constitution and allow for a referendum or we are courting trouble.”
